Conceptual Physics B Midterm
This portion of the Midterm is worth 50 Points. Choose enough questions to score up to 50 points. Do not answer questions in excess of 50 points.
In the questions which include a math component, the unknowns in the questions below will be written on blackboard or overhead.
Two (2) point questions
1. Compare and contrast potential and kinetic energy, and give an example of each.
2. Explain Newton's Law of Cooling
3. Compute the efficiency of a machine when given output work and input work.4. Convert Celsius to Fahrenheit, or Fahrenheit to Celsius.
5. Explain the 2 laws of thermodynamics.
6. Compare and contrast the 3 methods of heat transfer.
7. Explain how thermal expansion is used to our benefit.
8. Explain entropy.
Three (3) point questions
9. Compute the gravitational potential energy when given mass and the distance it is raised off the ground.
10. Name 3 types of potential energy and give an example of each.
11. Explain thermal equilibrium, and the atomic theory behind it.
Five (5) point questions
12. Define the 6 possible phase changes.
13. Explain what a calorie is and contrast it to a Calorie.
14. Explain what specific heat capacity of an object is, and describe why the specific heat of water is so important.
15. Name 5 unique properties of water.
Ten (10) point questions
16. Compute the power used when given mass, the distance the mass is lifted off the ground, and the time it takes to do the task.
17. Compute the mechanical advantage of the the pulley system, the ramp, and the lever displayed on the overhead.
