Text: pages 108-152; 642-669. 7 day unit.

Conceptual Text:  pages 103-121; 306-370. 15 day unit.

OBJECTIVES

After completing this section, students will be able to:

1.    explain the concept of conservation of energy, using kinetic and potential energy in a closed system,

2.    describe the three major methods of heat transfer,

3.    explain the difference between thermal energy, heat and temperature,

4.    compare and contrast heat conductors and insulators,

5.    explain thermal expansion,

6.    explain the concept of specific heat, particularly as applied to water,

7.    compare and contrast internal and external combustion engines,

8.    know some advantages and disadvantages of alternative energy sources,

9.    convert between Celsius and Fahrenheit scales,

10.  apply the formulas to compute work and power.

Activities

1.    Demonstration of convection, conduction, radiation and specific heat using a lava light.

2.    Demonstration of an external combustion engine using a model steam engine.

3.    Fun with Liquid Nitrogen1001 things to do with liquid nitrogen.

4.    Web research & Internet Lesson.

5.    A worksheet on energy flow.

6.    An outline of work and power problems.

7.    An outline of Celsius/Fahrenheit conversions.

8.    A research paper on an alternate energy source.  Here is the outline.
