Permanent Roofing System Shingle Defective Paint
This page details the deterioration of the aluminum shingles I purchased from Permanent Roofing System in Quebec. These were purchased in spring of 2007 and installed during the summer/fall of 2007. Click here to go to the PRS homepage. After researching metal roofing systems for 2 years, I chose Permanent Roofing System aluminum shingles. Permanent Roofing System employees were very helpful before and during installation. Less so upon paint failure. First, pictures of the roof from fall 2007, during installation. Now, pictures of the same area, taken one year later, after the 1st snow of 2008. This installation is in NE Ohio. Below are pictures taken February 15th, 2009. The situation appears to be worsening.

Of particular interest is the fact that the paint-less splotches never extend down onto the lower shingle. If this damage had occurred once on the roof, you would expect to see some blotched extend onto the next shingle down. Since the shingles were removed from the box and placed on the roof, the defect occurred before they were placed in the box. This is a defect, most likely caused by a splash of something prior to painting. Also significant is the fact that the shingles in the 4 triangles came from a second batch of shingles (4 boxes). Permanent Roofing System is not honoring their Warranty. If any others are having problems with these shingles, I would appreciate hearing about it. I will post problems others send to me on this site. Be sure to take pictures. Permanent Roofing System is currently not communicating with me concerning this issue. Permanent Roofing System has offered no explanation, and they refuse to acknowledge this potential defect. My best guess is something splashed on the shingles during the painting process which caused the paint/primer/etcher to fail to adhere. I lean toward the error occurring during the initial primer/etching phase, since the defective shingles show bare aluminum. Before purchase, I left a sample shingle outside for a year to gauge the effect. There was no change in the test shingle over one winter. Similarly, the installed shingles lasted one winter and started to deteriorate after the second snow. The 50 year Permanent Roofing System warranty appears to be worthless.
