Solubility rules

These rules are useful for determning:
bulletWill a precipitation reaction occur?
bulletHow can a particular solid compound be created?
bulletWill a compound dissolve in water?

Generally soluble

bulletCompounds containing alkali metals or NH4+
bulletCompounds containing NO3-
bulletCompounds containing CH3COO- (acetates)
bulletChlorides, bromides, iodides (these ions combined with Pb2+, Ag+, Hg22+ form insoluble compounds)
bulletSO42- (these ions combined with Pb2+, Ba2+, Sr2+, Hg22+ form insoluble compounds)

Generally insoluble

bulletCompounds containing OH- or S2- (these ions combined with alkali metals, Ba2+ or the ammonuim ion are soluble)
bulletCompounds containing CO32- or PO43- (these ions combined with alkali metals are soluble)
