Light and Optics

Text: pages 482-534. 5 day unit.

Conceptual Text:  pages 404-498.  15 day unit

Objectives

After completing this section, students will:

1.    know where visible light fits in on the electromagnetic spectrum,

2.    compare and contrast opaque, translucent and transparent materials,

3.    explain the difference between colored light and colored pigments, and how reflected light creates colors we see,

4.    be able to compare and contrast concave and convex lenses, and identify their uses,

5.    be able to compare and contrast concave and convex mirrors, and identify their uses,

6.    be able to compare and contrast reflection, refraction and diffraction of light,

7.    be able to explain the principles and uses of lasers and optical fibers,

8.    appreciate how the above concepts are applied to the lighting of modern theatre.

Activities

1.    A lab in which lenses, mirrors and other optical items are examined.

2.    An internet lesson.

3.    Watching rock concert videos to observe use of various projection screens, lighting effects and lasers.
